A switchback is a section of queue that winds back and forth in order to hold the maximum number of guests in one section.  When the holding space is not needed, the switchbacks can be roped off so guests do not zigzag unnecessarily.  When they are needed, they can be reopened to hold more people in one space.  In theme parks, they are often utilized in indoor queues with show elements so guests spend more time learning the story of the attraction (i.e. Doctor Doom’s Fearfall‘s pre-show area).
